VISITaTOR

Clustering and visual presentation of visitor groups
based on access patterns

Software requirements

It will be assumed all the work occurs on the local computer with a locally installed Web server.
  • PHP 4.3.0 and up with
    1. SQLite database
    2. enabled zip library (extension=php_zip.dll in php.ini)

If you are not sure that your system meets these requirements, you can download XAMPP - the complete PHP environment with all needed components enabled - under www.apachefriends.org.
The lite version named XAMPPlite will do as well.

  • Internet Explorer 5.0 and up
  • Windows OS (because of IE)
  • Locally downloaded log access files (.log, .gzip)
  • Access rights to create and delete directories and files via PHP-scripts.
Under IIS, you should add the account IUSR_YOUR-COMPUTER_NAME into the proper group
All these requirements are only significant for this experimental version of the program.
Actually, the method could be implemented with any database, any language and any client application.

Requirements for log files

  • The smallest size: 1000 unique human visitors (all kinds of robots should be ignored).
You can also try it using smaller amount of data, but the groups may get too insignificant.
  • The biggest size: depends on the capability of your computer.
With too large amount of data, I have experienced the server process working unpredictably.
It will be recommended to begin with 10 Mb or less of log data.
  • The log data must be homogeneous. Only choose time periods where no content was altered, no new content was added, no marketing actions have begun etc.
